ANALYSIS OF PLACEMENT TESTS FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS (UAIC)

Abstract:
Having as a starting point the multiple choice test passed at the beginning of the academic year, the results of the present statistics will underline the fact that the level of knowledge of English in the case of Computer Science from Alexandru Ioan Cuza University is a very good one, ranging from B1 to C2, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The test contains varied multiple choice questions, including vocabulary, reading comprehension and use of English, it has 80 questions to be solved in maximum 30 minutes and the results of the test applied on 410 students speak for themselves in a positive manner. The purpose of this test has been a double one, from the very beginning: -to analyze the level of knowledge of English of the students from Alexandru Ioan Cuza University, the Faculty of Computer Science - to detect the level of internal consistency (of reliability) for two of the sections that we have created based on the specificity of the items, that is “Tenses” and “Vocabulary”. The procedure was the following: the multiple choice test containing 80 items was passed exactly at the first seminar, the students were told that there is only one correct answer out of 4 choices and the time for solving the test was established to 30 minutes. Moreover, in order to have a complete solved test, not a single question should be left unanswered, so that the level of internal consistency could be calculated. The results of the test have shown that the level of reliability is a good one, as far as the section “Tenses” is concerned (the Alpha Cronbach value was .77, superior to the threshold of .69). Regarding “Vocabulary”, the obtained value was .61, inferior to the threshold of .69, thus indicating that some changes should be made in this case, in order to increase this part’s internal consistency.
